Emily Ventura and Katherine Alexander, Slow Food Los Angeles’s Social Action committee chairpersons, will be speaking at the opening of the Milagro Allegro Community Garden in Highland Park. The Garden will integrate urban farming, art and education in the heart of the Highland Park neighborhood. Garden plots will be available for interested community members, and a community gathering space will host classes, workshops and events. Local schools may incorporate the garden into curriculum or after-school activities.
When: Saturday, May 9, 2009 from 9:00 until noon
Where: At the Garden, 115 S. Ave 56 (behind the Highland Theatre)
The event will also include a blessing of the land, activities for children, and refreshments.
The community project has been made possible by generous contributions from Councilman Ed Reyes, Assemblyman Kevin de Leon, the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, the LA Community Garden Council, LA Conservation Corps, Home Depot, Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council, and numerous volunteers led by Nicole Gatto and Oscar Duardo.
