Slow Food Los Angeles

Good, clean and fair food access for all of L.A.

News from the Social Action Committee

Jody Donnelly, Slow Food LA’s Social Action Coordinator, alerts us to an upcoming conference and to the matters discussed at the recent Social Action committee meeting. Read on…

Dear Social Action Committee Members,
Attached is information about a conference called “Taking Back the Food System: Organizing for Food Justice in California” happening June 10 & 11 at USC. This will be a great opportunity to learn about the landscape of community food issues as we continue to formulate the Social Action Committee’s mission. If you have not already signed up and you’d like to attend, you can still call early [this] week to reserve your spot.

For those of you who were unable to attend our meeting at Angeli Caffé on May 26th, here’s an update:

With Evan’s wonderful fresh-baked bread and olive oil & refreshments as accompaniment, we discussed the following:

  • As a way of networking and partnering with existing organizations working on community food issues in L.A., we’ve identified an e-newsletter on community food issues and solicited volunteers to receive these email updates and keep the committee at large informed about current issues and events. If you would like to sign up to help with this, please let me know.
  • *We also discussed the possibility of functioning as a “clearing house” for community food events/efforts in the area; our role would be to gather and disperse cohesive information about food and social justice, becoming a resource not only for our fellow Slow Food members, but for the community of food and justice activists in So. Cal.
  • There was an announcement about a fundraising effort to send four youths from the Healthy School Food Coalition to “Youth Rooted in Community,” a national youth organizers conference July 15-18, 2004 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where they will share their strategies for successful community organizing which helped create the soda ban and the obesity prevention motion passed by LAUSD. If you are interested in making a donation to support their efforts, please call Francesca de la Rosa at 323.341.5097.
  • The Healthy School Food Coalition holds its next meeting at 6:00 pm on June 29th at Beyond Shelter, 520 S. Virgil (near 6th St.) 3rd floor Meeting Room; parking available in lot directly behind Beyond Shelter building. Andrew Glazer, LAUSD Board Member Marlene Canter’s assistant, will be speaking.

Looking ahead, our next meeting is scheduled for July 28th. Mark your calendars!! John Peroni from the Echo Park Community Foundation will give us an update on his group’s efforts to preserve a very important community garden in Echo Park.

    Happy Spring into Summer!
    Your Social Action Coordinator,
    Jody Donnelly
