The California Institute of Technology is hosting its third campus-wide olive harvest festival this Friday, November 5, 2010, from 8:00am until 3:00pm. Volunteers are invited to help harvest olives from trees throughout the Pasadena campus, to share a harvest lunch, and to attend tastings and demonstrations in the afternoon. Olive oil resulting from the harvest will be sold through the Caltech bookstore in about a month’s time. For more information or to register to participate, visit the Olive Festival website.
For those who can’t spend a weekday harvesting olives in Pasadena, don’t despair! Raw olives are now coming into many of our area farmers’ markets, and Felicia Friesema has directed us to a great online resource from the University of California’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources: “Olives: Safe Methods for Home Pickling.” For Felicia’s L.A. Weekly article on olives, visit the Squid Ink website.
